The new year has started out for me having time to paint and plan and paint some more. The Ranger Company soldiers were part of Santa Ana's army during the siege of the Alamo. The battle is reenacted every year at the Alamo. Authentic costumes and firearms are a must for this event. I enjoy the authenticity of this annual event and appreciate the opportunity to paint this Ranger.

I attended a great workshop this past week end at the Highland House Gallery in Boerne, Texas. Jay Hester, known for his western art and sculptures, held a two and a half day workshop on portraits. What an unbelievable experience and opportunity to paint with Jay! This beautiful lady, Christi, was our model.
I can hardly wait for another of Jay's workshops. If you haven't visited this gallery you have missed some really good art.

This week end in San Antonio I took a workshop of Carol Marine's. Wow! What a wonderful experience. She is so generous with her knowledge and such a warm and wonderful teacher.
One thing she suggested was that we keep our blogs current and honest.
So to keep my blog current I am posting a painting today. And to keep it honest I am sharing an unfinished painting. I am enjoying this painting and am almost done. This posting should motivate me to get it finished and framed and hanging in Susan Carlin's gallery.

It is obvious that I need further instruction on the human anatomy if I am going to continue to attempt portraits. But what fun! Practice, practice, practice. This is a painting I started while hosting Susan Carlin's gallery last week and then finished it up in my home studio. I made some adjustments since posting it so decided to re-post it. I added more reflective color to the water and made some adjustments to the horizon and sunset.

It is such fun hosting the gallery and sharing the painting experience with the visitors to the gallery. My favorite guest this day was a young girl about ten years old. She had a real curiosity about the process and ask many questions. You never know. She may become a great artist one day!

Well, today I attempted another portrait. This went well, I think. This was done from a black and white photo taken of my grandfather when he served in law enforcement back in the 1930's. He was so confident and loved wearing this ten-gallon hat for his official campaign photos.

Visiting the river walk in San Antonio always inspires a painting in me. I love vibrant colors and the umbrellas never seem to fail to capture the sunlight just right and provide a painting or photo opportunity. They seem to dance and say, "Come and play". There is so much activity and life on the river walk. It is a wonderful vacation spot for families.

Well, we are leaving Louisiana in the broad daylight, as the song goes. It was a lovely trip but no time to paint. I did take some photos so maybe one will inspire me. Got to meet my sister's great granddaughter, Savannah. What a precious doll! She makes everyone smile with her sweet disposition and her chubby little legs making their way across challenging obstacles like grown up feet and tall grass. I may feel a painting coming on!

I love the San Antonio River Walk and all that it has to offer locals and tourists. I have the unique privilege of hosting galleries in La Villita right near the River Walk every week. Being in downtown San Antonio and on the River Walk is one of my favorite things to do when I am not painting. I just spent several days on the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas. Such beautiful country! The water is crystal clear and the oak trees stand majestically, looking no worse for the drought. I am inspired!

Finding time to paint is my daily goal! I love getting lost in the process. This still life was a set up with flowers I received from my dear husband. And pomegranates have always been a favorite of mine to paint. I love the rich colors of the fruit and the softness of the tulips against the dark background. Can't wait to get it framed and hanging in the gallery.
